It all started on Mother’s Day for Heartland Hospice patient, Cynthia. Great news from her son and daughter-in-law, along with help from Heartland Hospice Serving Lehigh Valley, inspired her to turn her hobby into a passion.
“My son Eric came over for a visit. At one point in our conversation, he said to me ‘You’ve been a great Mom and an even better Grandmother. How would you like to try to be an even better Great Grandmother?’ Eric's youngest son and wife are expecting their first baby at the end of the year. Of course I was very happy!
In thinking what I could get for the baby, Eric suggested that I could crochet a blanket. After much thought, I decided I would crochet three blankets; one for my granddaughter and one to be kept at each grandmother's house. Eric and his wife, Jennifer, said that I did a beautiful job and made another suggestion to continue making blankets for unwed mothers to keep their babies warm and cozy.
I have been in hospice care for several months and the Heartland Hospice team encouraged me to go for it! My team and family donated yarn. As the yarn came in, it brought so much meaning to my days and it was fun to mix and match the colors. The Social Worker and Chaplain connected Care Net of the Lehigh Valley which reaches out to many women who have little means to get through their pregnancies and to care for their babies. In October, they came to celebrate my donation of 25 blankets. Very soon I will have another 25 blankets to donate! They were very pleased and I was happy that I was able to help others!”
Eric is very thankful that Heartland Hospice has not only been supportive of his mother’s passion, but also supportive and caring for her at the end-of-life. “It is hard to understand the importance of hospice until someone you love needs their services. Heartland Hospice has become a critical part of my mother’s care plan. They have provided an extra layer of care and support to what my mother is receiving at the long-term care facility. This extra level of care is a benefit to me since I live out of state; I know that there is another advocate for her care. This gives me a great piece of mind. Thank you!”
