Heartland Hospice Serving Greater Reading hosted a “Welcome Home” Vietnam Veteran Ceremony on March 5, 2020 at the Berks County Agricultural Center to honor the local Vietnam Veterans and give them the acknowledgement and respect so well deserved for their service to our country. The Heartland team hosted this in honor of National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29th. Martha Grimm, Heartland Hospice Bereavement Coordinator and “We Honor Veterans” committee member tells about the fond memories planning and hosting the event.

“The hospice team and members from the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 131 worked together over the last year preparing the celebration to honor these special veterans. A particularly meaningful part of the preparations was the gathering of the Chapter 131 members at the Heartland agency to make the Vietnam beads. The beads had to be made by and presented by a Vietnam veteran.”

“What a day! From the moment the first Vietnam Veterans arrived, to the lively conversations after the ceremony, it was a wonderful celebration. Upon their arrival, the comradery and care for each other was evident. We wanted the day to revolve around them. Everything from the boisterous singing during the Salute to the Branches, to the meaningful words of our guest speaker, to each hug and thank you as they received certificates, a Vietnam medal and the specially made Vietnam beads. Being able to see the gratitude from the Vietnam Veterans attending the ceremony was our goal.  We saw it, felt it and heard it. Again, what a day!”
