What can you do to ensure your home is safe as you and your loved ones age? Simple ways to reduce the likelihood of an in-home injury:

  1. Illuminate stairways; use light switches at the bottom and top of stairs
  2. Use night lights along your route to the bathroom or kitchen
  3. Have handrails on both sides of the stairway
  4. Tack down all carpeting or rugs
  5. Arrange furniture so there are no obstacles
  6. Do not use your hallways or stairwells for storage
  7. Use grab bars on bathroom walls and non-skid mats or strips in the bathtub
  8. Wear good shoes with non-skid soles
  9. Keep outdoor steps and walkways in good repair; salt them when it snows
  10. Keep all cords out of the flow of traffic
  11. Replace all fraying or cracking electrical cords
  12. Keep flammable items located away from all cooking tops
